Climbing

Fri Apr 3, 2009, 8:19 PM
Ok I don't really care if anyone reads this or not, I just HAD to type it in!

I started climbing again the start of this year. I used to climb in junior high since they had the walls in the gym and got into lead climbing a bit when I was there; I'd given it up until recently. I got my lead cert a month after I starting climbing again at a local gym and went onward from there. Just a quick explanation, top roping (what you do when you drop-in climb at a climbing gym) is when the rope runs from the belayer to the top of the climb through an anchor, then back down to the climber, so when you fall, its only a couple of inches. Lead climbing is the process of bringing the rope with you, and clipping draws/placing pro and clipping it as means of protection. I'm doing sport climbs atm, which means all the bolts are there, you just hang a draw and clip the draw so when you fall, your draw acts as your anchor like in a top rope situation to arrest your fall.

I started out leading open climbs and tried some routs and did a 5.9 lead climb (difficulties range from 5.1's to 5.15's, 5.1 being super easy, 5.15 being climbing up basically glass). It went ok'ish the first few times until one time I was up at my 3rd draw, going to clip it and being in a bad spot to clip, I blew it and fell off. I took a big fall from there and just about broke my bloody legs as I stopped literally half a foot off the ground! That turned me away from lead climbing for a while and any time I got on lead again, I would just shake a lot out of nervousness.

Well, a month later, a few easier lead climbs in, I'm back leading 5.9's again! And no close shaves with broken legs any more! I'm so stoked, I can't wait to try some of those 5.9 routes I'd always wanted to do and keep improving!

Well thats all for now... And well, yeah, more pictures... Sometime!

Just a look back...

Just looking back at all my photos I've submitted and... Man I've submitted a lot of crap... Maybe I'm being too hard on myself, I mean we all learn somewhere right? What I mean though is I've submitted a lot of, regular, plain old point and shot pictures...

This is one thing I aim to reduce now, I'm not saying I've gone huge distances farther now than I was then (although I have improved) I just don't want to submit as much regular photos. Seeing some of my white washed, oh look a duck, hey a leaf kind of photos that really aren't that creative just don't cut it for me any more. I guess that happens when you first get a camera though...

Anyways, look forward to more of my better stuff, and a lot less of the regular, every day crap.

Back!

Ok so, maybe a few of you have been wondering where I've been, or why the lacking of anything new. As always, life got busy, new job, etc etc, but I'm back now, and just came back from a holiday :). So that means I have new pictures to upload.

However unlike the last one, I'm not uploading all of the pictures, I'm going to try and be really selective and keep to the really good ones, which, surprisingly, there are a lot more of this time round (yay for getting better!).

So anyways, I'm back, hopefully ready to get more photos and back on track!

I got commissioned!

Sweet! Nothing huge here but, my sisters friend at work is getting married and are looking for a "cheap" way to do photography at their wedding, so my sister recomended me so I'm going to be shooting it for them :D.

So I'm excited and really nervous at the same time, I mean its is good right, even if it dosn't pay much, its great experience and I've always wanted to get deeper into this but at the same time am I good enough for it? I don't want to dive in before I'm ready and ruin my reputation. Asides from that, I've heard lots of horror stories from other photographers who got crucified for messing up photos or just not taking the right style of pictures.

So with that all said, does ANYBODY have any tips that could help me here? Anything is good guys and gals, anything you can think of would be awesome. I mean the shoot is in May so I have lots of time to get out and practice, and I definatly need to buy (or rent if I don't get cash in time) for this. Anyways, tips!! Please!! I need all your help here!
